Did you know that 39% of human trafficking victims were trafficked for sexual exploitation? Many of these victims are boys and girls who have had some of their best young years stolen from them. Here at The Mission Haven, we focus on helping survivors heal and rebuild their lives. Every trafficking survivor who walks through our doors may carry trauma, but we focus on helping them heal and harnessing their God-given potential. We do this by providing them with the support they need to recover and lead their best lives.
Within our shelter's walls, young trafficking survivors are furthering their education, enrolling in courses, learning new skills, coming out of their shells, getting jobs, and reuniting with loved ones. But transformation like this doesn't happen in isolation. It takes a community of committed people who choose not to ignore one of society's most serious problems, but instead take action to help.
This is why we need the support of everyone, including you reading this blog to join hands to push back on the damage being done by domestic minor sex trafficking in our communities today. The Mission Haven is at the forefront of these efforts and here's how you can support these young survivors on their journey to healing and reclaiming their lives:
1. Volunteer Your Time and Skills
The Mission Haven is 100% led by passionate volunteers. You can be one of us. We rely on the support of volunteers to assist in various capacities, from administrative help to direct survivor support. Volunteer your time and skills to support the work we do at The Mission Haven. Volunteering is a great way to show that you care about the future of survivors.
As a volunteer, you can:
Mentor survivors as they develop life skills and career plans
Help maintain our shelter facilities and gardens
Assist with administrative tasks and fundraising events
Organize donation drives and community awareness programs
2. Donate Essential Items
Our residents often arrive with only the clothes they've got on. Donating clothing, toiletries, school supplies, or household items can make a significant difference. If you’re not sure what to donate, you may reach out to us to find out what specific items are needed most. But we appreciate any and every in-kind donation. Each personal care item or piece of clothing you donate will definitely serve a need in the lives of survivors.
3. Provide Financial Support
We rely on the generosity of community members, foundations, and sponsors to continue our mission of rescuing and restoring trafficking survivors. Every financial donation, regardless of amount, helps transform our residents’ lives. Whether you can give $10 monthly or make a one-time larger contribution, your support goes a long way in caring for survivors.
We've earned the Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency for financial accountability, so you can trust that your donations will be used well. Every dollar you donate goes straight to supporting survivors on their journey to healing. These contributions help us:
Maintain safe, supportive housing for survivors
Offer mental health counseling and trauma therapy
Provide medical care and legal advocacy
Fund educational and vocational training programs
Cover emergency needs for residents
The donation process is simple and flexible. You can make a one-time donation of any amount, or set up recurring contributions on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis. Our donor portal is secure and you can easily adjust your donation amount at any time.
4. Become an Impact Partner
If you own a business or work for a company that’s passionate about social justice, consider establishing a partnership with The Mission Haven. As an Impact Partner, your company joins a dedicated network of businesses committed to fighting human trafficking's long-term impact in our community.
Our current partners include design firms, resource management companies, and other local businesses that have found meaningful ways to support our mission. Contact us to learn more about our partnership opportunities.
5. Raise Awareness
Many people may not fully understand the extent of sex trafficking or its profound impact on survivors. When you read our blog, share our posts on social media, or speak about our work at community events, you help educate others about the reality of trafficking and the hope of recovery. This increased awareness could inspire others to get involved — from individuals who become donors or volunteers, to organizations that offer partnership and support.
Sharing a post — like this one you're reading — or starting a conversation about preventing sex trafficking or helping survivors might seem like a small act. But these collective efforts help to raise more awareness and ultimately also help us reach more survivors and gather the resources needed to support their healing journeys.
